When Samsung tipped its Unpacked event in New York City, there was no mystery surrounding what the company would announce. It’s no surprise, then, that the company stuck to the script and opened the curtain to its latest flagship, the Galaxy S4.

The Galaxy S4 has a similar exterior to its predecessor, the Galaxy S III. The most notable differences are a larger screen (5-inch 1080p next to the S3’s 4.8-inch 720p) and a thinner build. It’s around eight percent thinner than the Galaxy S3.

The S4 – like its predecessor – will ship in two different models (depending on region). One version totes an octa-core – yes, eight cores – processor: Samsung’s own Exynos 5 Octa CPU, clocked at 1.6 GHz. The other version is a 1.9 GHz quad-core Snapdragon chip from Qualcomm. The phone sports 2 GB of RAM, and will be sold in three storage variants: 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB. It also sports an improved 13-megapixel camera.

The S4 sports several new camera software features. Dual Camera combines video or images from the front and back cameras, under a variety of templates. Also included is Drama Shot, which takes bursts of shots and combines them automatically into a collage. The Sound & Shot feature – as you might expect – adds sound clips to still photos.

The device runs on Android 4.2.2 Jellybean, with Samsung’s Touchwiz UI layered on top. Samsung hasn’t yet announced pricing or specific release info, but it says that the handset will ship globally beginning in Q2, 2013.

HTC launched its newest smartphone Tuesday, sporting a revamped interface and new entertainment features.

The HTC One has a 4.7-inch display in an industrial-looking aluminum body. It also has a refreshed Sense interface, HTC’s take on the Android operating system. Its BlinkFeed home page gives One users a rolling media feed that draws news and status updates from social networks and elsewhere.

The One’s entertainment options include a 1080p Super LCD 3 display. The phone also can be connected to SenseTV to act as a television remote that can control and access audio, program guides and TV channels.

It has dual frontal stereo speakers that provide what HTC has dubbed “BoomSound” audio. The enhanced sound, which is amplified with the company’s Beats Audio partnership, is also heightened for audio recording and phone calls.

The One will be available by the end of March. It will come with either 32 GB or 64 GB of storage. HTC hasn’t released any pricing details yet.

Starting from tomorrow, February 14, Micromax will start selling its latest flagship smartphone for RS13,990 ($260) and not $280 as reports were suggesting recently. According to the company, shipments will arrive in 5-7 days, after the order has been placed.

The A116 Canvas HD is competing with the almost twice as expensive Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos I9082, which is also on sale in the country. Considering that and the more capable hardware the Canvas HD should be able to make easy work of its competitor.

Mercedes has thrown the wraps off the A 45 AMG ahead of its global premiere at the Geneva Motor Show next month. The hot-hatch marks the first time Mercedes’ performance division has released a vehicle in the compact class in its 45-year history. And its first effort doesn’t pull many punches, with a 2.0-liter engine that Mercedes touts as the most powerful series production four-cylinder engine in the world.

Said turbocharged engine boasts a maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) and up to 450 Nm of torque, giving the unit a power density of 133 kW (181 hp) that Mercedes says outstrips even the most powerful super sports cars. Despite this, the engine complies with the EU6 emissions standards, with CO2 emissions of 161-165 g/km and fuel consumption figures of 6.9 liters per 100 km (34 mpg) in NEDC combined mode.

The engine is mated to AMG’s seven-speed SpeedShift dual-clutch transmission, which transfers power to the vehicle’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system that comes as standard. What this adds up to is a zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) time of 4.6 seconds, on the way to the electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

The A 45 AMG also sports what Mercedes calls a “Momentary M mode,” which allows the driver to activate manual mode while in “C” (Controlled Efficiency) and “S” (Sport) modes by pressing the up or down shift paddle once. S and M modes promise shift times similar to those of the SLS AMG GT super sports car, while C mode puts comfort and fuel efficiency at the fore and activates the ECO start/stop function.

Mercedes promises a “fascinating, full engine sound” from the vehicle’s AMG sports exhaust system that features large pipe cross-sections and an automatically controlled exhaust flap and is also found on its bigger brother, the SLK55 AMG. If that doesn’t satisfy, an “even more emotional and striking engine sound” can be had with the optional AMG Performance exhaust system.

Various option packages are also available, adding everything from a rear aerofoil and larger front splitter, to privacy glass and AMG wheel bolt covers.

Just as Mercedes’ introduction of the new A Class at last year’s Geneva Motor Show was an attempt to attract a new demographic to the three-pointed star fold, the A 45 AMG is its performance division’s attempt to appeal to buyers who are younger than AMG’s traditional clientele – and when we say younger, we mean those in the 30 to mid-40 age bracket.

The A 45 AMG is set to go on sale on April 8, 2013, at a price yet to be announced. It will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, which starts on March 5.

So, Are You Protected?

The truth is, no one is absolutely certain. The way things are going, you should be fine, but if our government decides to nail online sportsbooks like they did online poker sites, you’re probably going to get screwed (financially, at least). So the question is, will our government go after these sportsbooks?

There are two popular laws that get cited when online gambling is brought up: the Wire Wager Act and the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). Both sound bad. The UIGEA especially:

“Prohibits gambling businesses from knowingly accepting payments in connection with the participation of another person in a bet or wager that involves the use of the Internet and that is unlawful under any federal or state law.”

But when I spoke to Lawrence G. Walters of Walters Law Group, he stressed that though these laws are fairly broad, they’ve been “interpreted by the courts to regulate gambling businesses”, not individual Joe Everyman Bettor. That means that in practice, at least so far, they’ve only been used “to prohibit individuals from becoming bookies, bookmakers or starting a betting business,” not to stop them from betting online.

However, Mr. Walters further explained that the nuance of legality also depends on your state. Some states (including, but not limited to, the three mentioned above) do have laws that say that betting on games of chance or skilled games is illegal. But since these betting activities are done over businesses on the internet, the question becomes “whether states have the legal authority to regulate the internet.” Which, it turns out, they can’t! The Commerce Clause of the Constitution explicitly states that only the federal government has the power “to regulate commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes.” And the feds have been much more forgiving.

Basically, the federal laws banning gambling have so far applied to gambling businesses in the United States, not individuals. State laws that do specify that gambling is illegal for individuals have no power to regulate the internet because of the Constitution. Judging by the fact that the feds haven’t made any movement toward shutting down sportsbooks (if they were going to, why not do it at the same time as the poker sites?), you’re very likely safe if you work with offshore bookmakers like 5Dimes andLegends.

Again, the best precedent for all of this is when the poker sites got shut down. The feds didn’t go after individual players, they went after the gambling businesses. Player deposits were frozen for a while but, even they were eventually returned. Presumably, any action against the sportsbooks would take the same route.

And if not, well, you’re gambling anyway, right?
